Saudi Reef Unveils Solar Tunnel to Boost Fig Production

General

Riyadh: The Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Program (Saudi Reef) has launched a solar drying tunnel project aimed at enhancing fig production. This innovative initiative seeks to reduce post-harvest losses by up to 30%, with each drying cycle capable of producing between 400 and 500 kilograms, while ensuring the quality and market value of the figs are maintained.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Majed Al-Buraikan, the Assistant Secretary-General for Media and Communication at Saudi Reef, announced the success of the project's three-month trial. During the trial, approximately 2,500 kilograms of dried figs were produced, resulting in a financial return exceeding SAR100,000. The initiative also included training 13 farmers and employees on the drying technology, and the trial was extended to other fruits besides figs.

The fruit sector is one of the eight sectors supported by Saudi Reef, playing a crucial role in enhancing food security. It provides an important source of nutrition for residents in targeted regions and across the Kingdom.
