Riyadh: The Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science convened its third Oceanographic Commission meeting yesterday, bringing together key national entities dedicated to marine science and conservation. This national committee was established to oversee Saudi Arabia's engagement with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Its core responsibilities include preparing periodic reports, coordinating relevant international programs and working groups, and participating in international marine initiatives.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the diverse committee comprises representatives from various pertinent bodies, including the ministries of culture, municipalities and housing, environment, water and agriculture, energy, and education. Also represented are the Saudi Geological Survey, the National Center for Wildlife, the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, the Heritage Commission, the Saudi Heritage Preservation Society, and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
OceanQuest, a Saudi non-profit based at KAUST, participated in the meeting to highlight its ongoing efforts to advance ocean sciences through innovative, high-quality projects that directly support the sustainability of the marine environment.
