Riyadh: In a remarkable achievement, the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) has announced the issuance of patent number 20,000, marking a key milestone that reflects the rapid growth of the Kingdom's intellectual property and innovation ecosystem. This accomplishment underscores the Kingdom's progress in protecting inventors' rights and empowering them to transform their ideas into legally protected assets.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the issuance of the 20,000th patent culminates a journey that began more than three decades ago, starting in June 1989 with the establishment of the Saudi Patent Office and the submission of the first patent application that same year. The first patent was granted in 1995. Since then, the granting of patents in the Kingdom has steadily evolved, driven by the establishment of SAIP and the development of supporting systems and procedures. Notably, patent number 10,000 was granted in 2022, and within less than three years-thanks to accelerated examination procedures-patent number 20,000 was issued in April 2025. This rapid progression reflects advancements in regulatory frameworks, improved service efficiency, and growing public awareness of the importance of intellectual property protection.
This milestone coincides with a rise in the number of Saudis eager to register patents. SAIP issued 345 patents to Saudi citizens during the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a 16% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The continuous rise in patent registrations demonstrates creators' growing confidence in the national intellectual property protection system. It highlights the effectiveness of national efforts to support and stimulate innovation, enabling individuals to convert ideas into safeguarded legal rights. This progress bolsters Saudi Arabia's position as a regional hub for innovation and creativity.
Chief Executive Officer of SAIP Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Swailem praised the vital role of innovators in advancing industrial and knowledge-based progress. He reaffirmed the authority's commitment to ongoing support for the national innovation sector, stating that every patent granted represents a success story-and that protecting creativity is not the end of the journey, but the beginning.
