Riyadh: International Geodiversity Day, observed annually on October 6, celebrates the progress of Earth sciences and their vital role in advancing sustainable development. The day also underscores the importance of geological sciences in addressing global challenges.
According to Saudi Press Agency, CEO of the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) Abdullah Al-Shamrani emphasized the SGS's role as a national and international leader in Earth science research, natural resource exploration, and geological monitoring. He noted that SGS works to protect society while enabling the Kingdom to make optimal use of its natural resources.
Al-Shamrani highlighted that the SGS strategy aligns with the rapid and comprehensive development taking place across Saudi Arabia. This progress demands reliable access to geological data, which is essential for conserving and developing natural resources and preventing their depletion.
He also stressed the importance of geological information in mitigating risks associated with natural hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, sand encroachment, and rising water levels. In addition, SGS, he said, uses its extensive data to conduct geological studies to identify optimal disposal sites for waste generated by construction and mining projects, ensuring the safety and sustainability of development efforts throughout the Kingdom.
