Riyadh: Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) set new records in 2024, transporting over 13 million passengers across its networks-an increase of 22% from the previous year. Freight operations also saw significant growth, with more than 28 million tons of goods and minerals moved, reflecting a 15% rise. These achievements underscore SAR's pivotal role in advancing the Kingdom's railway sector, bolstering the national economy, and enhancing logistics services.
According to Saudi Press Agency, during the 1445 AH Hajj season, the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line facilitated the transportation of over two million pilgrims, alleviating road congestion and improving the pilgrimage experience. Passenger train operations also expanded, recording a 19% increase with more than 35,000 trips, as growing numbers opted for safe and efficient rail travel.
SAR's freight operations played a crucial role in sustainability efforts, diverting over two million truck trips from Saudi roads. This shift conserved more than 113 million liters of fuel, reduced carbon emissions, and contributed to improved road conditions, aligning with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy's environmental objectives.
A landmark achievement in 2024 was the Dream of the Desert train launch, the first luxury rail experience of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), reinforcing Saudi Arabia's standing in high-end tourism. SAR also inaugurated a new freight rail route outside urban areas in Al-Ahsa, enhancing traffic safety and streamlining railway operations. The company further strengthened its strategic partnerships through 63 contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding with various entities.
On the quality and safety front, SAR secured six international certifications, reaffirming its adherence to the highest operational standards. Additionally, it launched a nationwide railway safety awareness campaign to educate the public on railway hazards and the importance of safeguarding public and private property.
