Riyadh to Host International Water Research Community Event

Riyadh:The seventh edition of the "Water Research Community" will commence tomorrow at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in Riyadh. This event is organized by the Saudi Water Authority, through the Water Technologies Innovation Institute and Research Advancements (WTIIRA), in collaboration with KACST, and is set to gather researchers, experts, and stakeholders in the water sector from around the globe. According to Saudi Press Agency, the event is part of Saudi Arabia's initiative to develop a specialized research environment that aligns scientific expertise with the needs of the water sector. It aims to create a global platform that links research and innovation with industry, translating water-related knowledge into practical applications that support water resource sustainability and enhance efficiency. The research outcomes from this initiative are anticipated to have an annual economic impact of up to SAR3 billion in the upcoming years. The initiative targets the conversion of appr oximately 15% of proposals into applied projects, the publication of over 250 scientific papers, the registration of 20 significant patents, and the funding of more than 15 projects. Additionally, it aims to establish Saudi startups with an estimated market value exceeding SAR300 million over the coming years. The event will focus on four key themes: materials science, technology integration, digital intelligence, and business models. Across its various editions, the initiative expects to engage more than 1,900 researchers and experts, generate over 470 research proposals, and result in the signing of 46 agreements. It will also host representatives from more than 60 local and international universities and academic institutions, including King Abdulaziz University, the University of Tabuk, the University of Manchester, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and King Saud University. Saudi Arabia currently accounts for about 2.3% of global water-sector research. Research related to Sustainable Deve lopment Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) makes up approximately 1.48% of total global scientific publications. The global market for water and wastewater treatment technologies is projected to exceed SAR1 trillion by 2026. The Water Research Community initiative is a key part of Saudi Arabia's strategy to build an advanced research and innovation ecosystem, localize technology, and facilitate knowledge transfer to tackle local and global water scarcity challenges. These efforts are aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, reinforcing the country's ambition to become a global hub for sustainable water solutions and innovation.
