Riyadh: The Roads General Authority (RGA) and the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (Wrth) have introduced the "Wrth Saudi" initiative, which installs informational signs along highways throughout Saudi Arabia. This initiative aims to introduce and celebrate the Kingdom's national crafts in a modern cultural and visual context.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative was launched in conjunction with 'The Year of Handicrafts.' The first phase of the initiative has been implemented on three major highways: the Riyadh-Dammam Road, the Hijra Road connecting Makkah and Madinah, and the Riyadh-Qassim Road. Future phases will see the initiative expand to other key roads across the country.
"Wrth Saudi" focuses on highlighting the traditional arts unique to each region, showcasing crafts such as Najdi door-making, clay construction, carpentry and wood decoration, and the bisht, a traditional Arabic cloak. These signs offer travelers an introduction to the cultural heritage of the area they are approaching.
Saudi Arabia's extensive road network, known as one of the most comprehensive globally, is frequently used by pilgrims and tourists. This initiative leverages this network to promote the country's cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.
The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts is instrumental in preserving national identity through the promotion of traditional Saudi arts both locally and internationally. It supports artisans, acknowledges cultural leaders, and fosters learning and innovation in the field of traditional arts.
