QFA’s Elections Committee Approves Candidates for President, Board Membership

Qatar Football Association (QFA)’s Elections Committee has approved the candidacy of HE Vice-President of QFA Jassim Rashid Al Buenain for the position of president, during the elections to be held in the next Ordinary General Assembly on June 1, to choose the board that will run QFA for the next term 2023-2027.

The current QFA Vice-President and Qatar SC candidate will be the only one applying for the presidential race for the succession of HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani, who has held the position since 2005.

During today’s meeting chaired by Abdullah Hamid Al Mulla, the Committee approved the candidacy of Hani Talib Balan of Qatar SC, Mohamed Khalifa Al Suwaidi of Al Rayyan, Hassan Juma Al Mohannadi of Al Khor and Khaled Abdullah Al Sulaiti of Al Arabi for the Executive Committee’s membership.

In a statement on Monday, Abdullah Hamid Al Mulla said that the Elections Committee examined the credentials of all candidates and found that they all fulfilled the conditions stipulated by the QFA’s electoral regulations for candidacy.

The Elections Committee’s President said that voting will take place during the Ordinary General Assembly meeting, which will be held on June 1, with the voting mechanism for voting will be in accordance with Article 28 of QFA’s Articles of Association, which requires that elections for the presidency are conducted on a relative majority of two-thirds of registered and valid votes in the first ballot. In the event of resorting to a second or any other necessary ballot, absolute majority of the registered votes i.e. 50 percent + 1 will need to be met.

Al Mulla added that when it comes to Executive Committee membership elections, an absolute majority of 50 percent + 1 must be met for registered and effective votes in the first ballot. In the event that there are more than two candidates for the same position, a voting will be conducted, with the two candidates having the highest votes will compete in a second or more ballots, for which an absolute majority of registered votes will be required. However, in the event that a single candidate applies to fill a single vacant position, the election process is done through voting on the basis of an absolute majority 50 percent + 1 of valid and sound votes.

The QFA’s Elections Committee opened the door for candidacy at the end of March, before closing it on April 17, 45 days before elections day, to choose the Executive Committee consisting of a president and four members.
