Riyadh: The skies over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will witness the peak of the Perseid meteor shower on the nights of August 12 and 13, in one of the year's most prominent and captivating astronomical phenomena for stargazing and astrophotography enthusiasts. The best viewing opportunities will be available at sites away from light pollution and in areas with favorable weather conditions.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Northern Borders Region Astronomy and Space Association Chairman Zahi Al-Khulaiwi informed that the Perseids are among the most active meteor showers of the year. He emphasized that Northern Borders Region is well-suited for observing this phenomenon due to its low levels of light pollution. Additionally, one site within the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve has been designated as a dark-sky site, enhancing the quality of astronomical observations.
Al-Khulaiwi also pointed out that August 12 will feature a total solar eclipse visible from parts of the western Arab world. Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation on August 15, followed by its conjunction with the Moon on August 16, while the Moon will be full on August 18.
Moreover, August will continue to showcase a series of notable astronomical events, including the appearance of the star Suhail on August 24, marking the beginning of its 53-day season. The month will conclude with a partial lunar eclipse on August 28, which will also be visible from parts of the western Arab world.
