Nut Forum discussed FGM (female genital mutilation) education issues at the seventh edition of Aswan International Women Film Festival.
The Nut Forum opened the activities of the second day of the seventh edition oh Aswan International Women Film Festival with a symposium presented by Plan International Egypt, which screened the film “Sarah’s Birthday” produced by Plan International in partnership with the National Council for Women.
” Sarah’s Birthday” movie incidents revolve around FGM (female genital mutilation) and its negative impact on girls.
Dr. Azza Kamel, Director of Nut Forum and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Aswan International Women’s Film Festival, said that Plan Egypt is always interested in partnering with civil society to discuss various social issues, and explained that the organization represents an important partner in the issues raised by the Nut Forum, which focuses mainly on women’s issues, especially in Southern governorates.
Engy Soliman, representative of Plan International Egypt, and Director of Strategic Partnerships and Community Impact said : “We are keen to participate in civil society activities and partner with the Nut Forum. In this edition of Aswan International Women Film Festival, we decided to present a serious societal issue in a different way through ” Sarah’s Birthday” movie and open discussion about the film with its director and the cast.
During the symposium “Sarah’s Birthday” cast talked about the master scenes of the film, the reason for choosing Sarah’s family to be a middle class one, the justifications that drive the family to think about committing a crime like FGM and how the mother has suffered to protect her daughter from FGM.
Nut Forum also discussed the issue of education in rural and remote areas through “Shamiya” movie directed by Mohamed Hisham, which was produced by Plan Egypt in partnership with the Ministry of Social Solidarity. The film presents girls’ initiative in leadership roles, and stresses the importance of completing girls’ education.
Abeer Salah El-Din, Documentation and Information Officer at the Ministry of Social Solidarity, said: “This film was produced on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl 2022 program, and about 20 girls participated in this program, and we felt that the character of Shamiya was attractive in the way she spoke and the story behind her.”
