New Initiatives Announced as Part of Jeddah Commitments in Global Fight Against AMR.

JEDDAH: The 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), held on November 15-16 in Jeddah, concluded with the adoption of the Jeddah Commitments, marking a significant step in the global response to AMR, a growing threat to public health, food security, and sustainable development. According to Saudi Press Agency, Saudi Health Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel emphasized that AMR, if unaddressed, poses a direct challenge to health systems, economic stability, and global security, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries. He stated: 'Here in Jeddah, we have established the building blocks and agreed critical actions to strengthen the global response to AMR.' Initiatives announced include the AMR One Health Learning Hub, based in Saudi Arabia, which will collaborate globally to provide training in low- and middle-income countries. It will focus on a One Health approach integrating human, animal, agricultural, and environmental health. The Regional Antimicrobial Access and Logistics Hub will improve access to safe, effective, and affordable antimicrobial medicines and diagnostics by enhancing supply chains, strategic stockpiling, and procurement strategies. The AMR Biotech Bridge aims to accelerate the development of innovative solutions, facilitating the transformation of research into practical applications by 2030. This initiative will support collaborations, streamline regulatory processes, and foster partnerships within and beyond Saudi Arabia. Additionally, a Troika System will be introduced to maintain accountability for AMR commitments, supported by international organizations. An independent evidence panel, set to launch in 2025, will provide guidance on addressing AMR effectively. Prime Minister of Barbados and Chair of the Global Leaders Group on AMR Mia Amor Mottley highlighted the importance of sustained political commitment, urging nations to seize this opportunity to turn the tide on AMR. The conference brought together ministers from 57 countries and over 450 experts, focusing on strengthening governance, capacity building, public awareness, and stewardship under the theme "From Declaration to Implementation." Al-Jalajel underscored the Kingdom's commitment, noting that Jeddah hosted the largest participation in the history of this conference series.
