Riyadh: The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) reaffirmed the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to expand vegetation cover, promote afforestation, conserve water resources, and enhance its resilience against desertification and drought caused by climate change and increasing human activity.
According to Saudi Press Agency, marking World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, observed annually on June 17, the center emphasized the importance of restoring degraded land to enhance food and water security and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change. It noted that over half of the world's GDP depends on natural resources and ecosystem services. The occasion aims to raise awareness about the impact of desertification and drought on food and water security, as well as biodiversity, and to promote sustainable land and water management practices that support land restoration. It also seeks to raise awareness of drought and its threats to sustainable development.
The center highlighted the implementation of relevant regulations and standards, the protection, development, and sustainability of forests, sustainable management of rangelands and national parks, and the rehabilitation and afforestation of degraded vegetation. It also emphasized the role of the private sector in executing related tasks, alongside the Kingdom's commitment to international agreements and performance reporting.
The center aims to support the Kingdom's strategic objectives under Vision 2030 by improving living standards and quality of life, reducing environmental pollution, and rehabilitating degraded lands.
