Makkah: From dawn until sunset, 16-year-old Mohammed Sayan Tandel sits in a study circle in a small town in Botswana, Southern Africa, with only one other person present-his teacher from Pakistan. There are no fellow students beside him, no peers with whom to compete, and no one to share the daily journey of memorizing the Holy Quran.
According to Saudi Press Agency, for Mohammed, being his teacher's "sole student" has become part of his Quranic journey. What began as a solitary pursuit in his hometown has now brought him to Makkah to participate in the 46th King Abdulaziz International Competition for Memorizing, Reciting, and Interpreting the Holy Quran.
"One of the greatest challenges I have faced is being my teacher's only student," Mohammed said, explaining that the experience can make memorizing the Quran a lonely journey, particularly in the absence of the spirit of competition experienced by peers in other parts of the Muslim world.
Yet solitude did not diminish his determination. Instead, it gave him a greater sense of focus and dedication, turning what might have been a limitation into a source of motivation.
When the Grand Mufti of Botswana nominated him to participate in this year's competition, Mohammed described the moment as a turning point in his life. He did not hesitate to accept the opportunity, recalling that he had drawn inspiration from a neighbor who previously participated in the same competition in 2019.
Now in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, accompanied by his parents, Mohammed has exchanged the quiet study circle of his hometown for the grandeur of Makkah. His first sight of the Holy Kaaba left him deeply moved.
"It was a feeling that words cannot describe, a mixture of awe, serenity, and joy," he said, noting that the journey was not merely about performing Hajj or Umrah, but about representing his country at a global event that every memorizer of the Quran dreams of attending.
From a study circle with just one student in a small Botswana town to the international stage in Makkah, Mohammed's journey reflects how determination can turn a solitary path into an extraordinary opportunity to stand among Quran memorizers from around the world.
