Migrating Masked Shrike Spotted in Northern Borders Region

Riyadh: The masked shrike (Lanius nubicus) was recently sighted in the Northern Borders Region, part of seasonal observations that highlight the Kingdom’s rich biodiversity and its importance as a key stopover along migratory bird routes through the Arabian Peninsula.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this small migratory bird is known for its distinctive appearance, characterized by a white head marked with a black mask extending from the eyes to the ears, along with black wings featuring white patches. The masked shrike primarily feeds on insects and small invertebrates but occasionally preys on small birds, using its swift movements and sudden dives.

Its migratory route extends from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, across the Middle East, including the skies of the Kingdom, to the African continent, where it spends the winter season. The sighting of the masked shrike in northern Saudi Arabia underscores the Kingdom’s role in sustaining biodiversity by providing natural habitats that support these seasonal journeys.
