International Asteroid Day 2026: Promoting Scientific Awareness to Protect Earth from Space Hazards

Jeddah: The world celebrates International Asteroid Day 2026 today, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of studying near-Earth objects and supporting scientific efforts to observe and understand their nature.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Jeddah Astronomy Society Director Majed Abu Zahra stated that International Asteroid Day represents an opportunity to enhance space science awareness in the Arab world and encourage participation in near-Earth object observation programs. This initiative leverages the natural advantages many Arab countries possess, including vast desert areas and clear skies, which support the establishment of astronomical observatories and scientific observation operations.

He noted that the occasion supports education and scientific research in astronomy and planetary science and strengthens cooperation between Arab universities, research centers, and international institutions.
