Innovative Farming Practices Boost Crop Production in Najran

General

Najran: Modern and innovative agricultural methods in Najran Region are yielding significant benefits, with greenhouse farming and vertical agriculture increasing production, reducing land usage, and helping water conservation.

According to Saudi Press Agency, agricultural waste utilization as fertilizer, such as compost, has contributed to agricultural development in the region, where agriculture has become an important economic pillar and a source of food security. Using modern technologies and sustainable practices, supported by favorable environmental factors such as fertile soil, a moderate climate, and abundant water, has made Najran an ideal environment for growing a wide range of crops throughout the year.

Over time, with the introduction of modern technologies, agriculture has evolved and become a significant social value for the Najran community. The techniques have relegated rudimentary farming methods, such as using animals for ploughing and simple irrigation techniques, to the past.

Najran is known for producing a variety of crops, including grains, dates, citrus fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and grapes, with the introduction of new crops such as coffee, rice, strawberries, and stevia.

Najran Coffee Agricultural Cooperative Society executive director Ali Al Harith highlighted the many advantages enjoyed by the region, which encourage farmers to cultivate diverse varieties and types of fruits, grains, and rare trees. He underscored that such experiments have been remarkably successful, with crops produced free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Al Harith remarked that the cooperative plays an active role in contributing to the development of new agricultural methods that keep pace with agricultural development in the Kingdom, especially Najran.

Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's branch in Najran plays a remarkable role in guiding farmers and developing their capabilities. It hosts workshops, lectures, and seminars focusing on soil conservation and reclamation and the adoption of modern technologies to develop the agricultural sector in the region. The branch works to equip farmers with new skills and educate them through programs and projects that it implements. Its role also includes providing seedlings and encouraging investment in various agricultural projects, including food industries related to agriculture.
