Mandalay: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on the international community to show solidarity and provide urgent funding for the humanitarian response to Myanmar's recent earthquake.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the organization stated that it has begun delivering emergency relief supplies, including food, water, medicine, and hygiene kits, but noted that operations are being conducted under extremely difficult conditions due to a lack of funding, electricity, sanitation, and communications.
The UNHCR announced that it has sent emergency aid to approximately 25,000 survivors in the Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw regions and is working to acquire additional supplies from its stockpiles.
Separately, the World Health Organization (WHO) provided three tons of medical supplies to hospitals in Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw within 24 hours of the earthquake. The WHO reported that it is conducting an assessment of damaged and destroyed healthcare facilities, noting that three hospitals were severely damaged and 22 were partially damaged but are still receiving critically injured patients.
