Statement by the General Union of Civil Societies in Egypt on the Human Rights Council Joint Statement

Posted on March 14, 2021 by Web Desk

The General Union of Civil Societies in the Arab Republic of Egypt declares on behalf of (52,000) associations and NGOs its rejection of this unjust statement.

Referring to the terrorism law in question, we would like to make it clear that Egypt’s issuance of such a law is an imperative to preserve human rights and complete the development process, and that inclusion on the lists of terrorism is not done until after all legal and judicial controls have been met.

Where were you when human rights were eliminated in the Brotherhood’s constitution?

Where were you when the file of women’s and children’s rights deteriorated?

Where were you when mosques and churches were burned?

Where were you when the international conventions and declarations were repealed from the 2012 Egyptian Constitution?

And why did you not mention the new Law Governing the Pursuit of Civil Work, which was passed through a broad community dialogue, stressing the Egyptian State’s keenness to support the civil society?

Why didn’t you talk about Egypt being the first country to issue a policy paper to support women in response to the economic and social impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic, and to issue 21 measures to support women during the pandemic, thus granting Egypt 1st rank in the Middle East and West Asia, according to a report by the United Nations and the United Nations Development Program.

Why didn’t you mention in your statement that Egypt is the first country in the world to launch its national strategy for women 2030 in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting the Egyptian State’s commitment to achieving women’s empowerment and enhancing their role in development efforts?

Why didn’t you point out in any of your statements that Egypt is the first country in Africa and the Middle East and North Africa to launch the Gender Gap Bridging Catalyst, the first initiative of its kind focused on achieving a specific sustainable development goal, the fifth goal on gender equality, promoting women’s economic empowerment, reducing the gender gap in the labor market, and changed the stereotyping of women.

Why have we never found a tribute on your part to the tremendous development efforts that are taking place aimed primarily at providing all forms of economic, social and political empowerment and freedom of expression to all categories of the Egyptian people, and despite the challenges faced by the world in containing the Coronavirus crisis, Egypt was the leader in maintaining economic growth indicators and providing all forms of support to the Egyptian people as well as to the peoples of friendly countries, out of the belief of the Egyptian State in the values of humanity and brotherhood among peoples and also its belief in its role in the consolidation of human rights.

The Egyptian State does not expect recognition of such efforts on your part, but we hope that you will be able to issue statements based on documented data and factual information.

Either you tell the truth or you remain silent.
