Grateful for the warm welcome to “Umm al-Dunya”: Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said of his visit to Egypt that he was “grateful for the warm welcome to ‘Umm al-Dunya’ (mother of the world) and look forward to my next visit.”

“The Egyptian people are remarkable in so many ways, including their tradition of tremendous hospitality,” Blinken tweeted on Monday.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi received Blinken on Monday in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, as well as the Chargé d’Affaires of the US embassy in Cairo Daniel Rubinstein.

Blinken assured Sisi that Washington is counting on close coordination with Egypt under his leadership to restore stability and contain the situation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, according to the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, Bassam Rady.

Blinken also expressed the US’s keenness to strengthen cooperation with Egypt on various political and security topics alongside regional issues.

The two officials reviewed recent developments in the Palestinian territories, and the joint efforts and Egyptian endeavors to contain the escalating tensions during the past days.

Sisi stressed the current crisis requires immediate action to calm the situation and limit any unilateral measures from Israel or Palestine.

He stressed Egypt’s firm position to reach a just and comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with international references.

The Egyptian spokesperson said that the meeting saw further consultation on various international and regional issues of common concern, such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
