Grand Mosque Library Safeguards Over 9,000 Rare Books

Makkah:The Grand Mosque Library is home to an extensive collection of 9,612 rare books, manuscripts, periodicals, and vintage newspapers, playing a significant role in preserving Islamic heritage and supporting academic research.

According to Saudi Press Agency, these rare items are categorized based on various scholarly criteria such as age, content, physical format, author dedications, calligraphy, and artistic decoration.

The library's collection is further enhanced by volumes with handwritten annotations by authors and lithographed elements, serving as valuable historical sources. The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has implemented conservation programs, which include ozone-based sterilization, routine inspections, rebinding, and page restoration, to protect these priceless documents.

In addition to physical preservation, the library is embracing digital transformation by providing access to its digital collection through on-site devices.

The library welcomes researchers and the general public from Saturday to Thursday, with operating hours from 800 a.m. to 845 p.m.
