Antiquities ministry begins restoration work of Ramses II statue in Sohag

Ministry of Antiquities has launched restoration work of Ramses II statue which is located at Akhmim archaeological area in Sohag governorate.

The move falls within the framework of the ministry’s efforts aimed at promoting Sohag governorate and putting it on the world tourist destinations, mainly after Sohag National Museum has been opened in 2018.

In a statement on Thursday 07/02/2019, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Moustafa Waziri said that Ramses II statue will be displayed at its original place next to Queen Meritamen in Akhmim site.

The Ramses II statue is made out of limestone, Waziri said adding that it is 15-meter height and weights about 45 tons.

Working on the statue will run for the coming few weeks, he noted.
