New York:Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi emphasized the importance of water security as a strategic priority for the stability of GCC member states, linking it closely with human security, economic prosperity, food security, and energy security.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Albudaiwi shared these insights during a panel discussion titled "Water as a Strategic Imperative From Global Challenges to Collective Action," which was organized by the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations. This event took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Albudaiwi noted that ongoing water scarcity in the region has prompted GCC countries to innovate and invest in areas such as desalination, wastewater recycling, and demand management. Additionally, they have focused on developing advanced technologies and strengthening the water-energy-food-climate nexus.
He further emphasized that technology alone is insufficient for ensuring water security. To address this, GCC nations are pursuing joint initiatives to establish a regional water grid interconnection. This project aims to enhance supply security, regional readiness, and response capabilities during emergencies.
Albudaiwi also advocated for the use of artificial intelligence, smart water management systems, and renewable energy, along with collaborative financing models involving governments, development institutions, and the private sector. These efforts aim to develop scalable infrastructure projects.
He concluded by highlighting the upcoming UN Water Conference, co-hosted by the UAE and Senegal, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi in December 2026. This conference is seen as a crucial platform for advancing multilateral water partnerships and tangible investments.
