Riyadh: The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) issued the Waste Accounts Bulletin for 2024. According to the results, the total volume of recorded waste from various economic activities, in addition to household waste, reached 135.1 million tons, compared to 111.4 million tons in 2023.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector recorded the highest volume of waste at 46.9 million tons, followed by the construction sector at 32.2 million tons and households at 20.5 million tons. Waste generated by manufacturing industries amounted to 18.3 million tons in 2024.
The results showed that organic waste accounted for the largest share of total recorded waste in 2024, at 45.7 percent, equivalent to 61.7 million tons. This was followed by construction-material waste at 22.8 percent and plastic waste at 5.8 percent of total waste.
Industrial-sector waste increased to 26.7 million tons, compared to 22.1 million tons in 2023. Waste from manufacturing industries constituted 68.6 percent of total industrial waste, followed by waste from mining and quarrying activities at 26.4 percent, and waste from electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning supply activities at 5.0 percent.
The bulletin was prepared in accordance with the Central Framework of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting issued by the United Nations Statistics Division. It is based on data from GASTAT, as well as administrative records from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and the National Center for Waste Management.
