EU calls for investigation into death of Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jail

The European Union Tuesday called for “transparent investigation” into the death of a prominent Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan in an Israeli jail today after 86 days on hunger strike.

“We take note of the death of Mr. Khader Adnan in the Israeli prison. We call for transparent investigation into his death and the circumstances that led to his death,” lead EU spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, told a news conference in Brussels.

He said the EU has been engaged on the case of Mr. Adnan with Israeli authorities including with the Ministry of health of Israel enquiring about his condition.

“The EU in general regrets all loss of life and reiterates the commitment of the EU to international humanitarian law and to all countries human rights obligations towards all prisoners,” said Stano.

He called on “all sides to prevent any escalation in an already volatile situation that could bring even more suffering and deaths if it is continuing like this.” According to media reports, Adnan, who was 44 and hailed from the north of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, had been in and out of Israeli jail for many years. Meanwhile, Stano announced that EU High Representative Josep Borrel will hold his first face-to-face meeting with Foreign Minister of Israel Eli Cohen in Brussels this afternoon
