Kabul: The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture: The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture emphasized that local millet, a food heritage of the southern Kingdom, is one of the most prominent domestic agricultural crops due to its high nutritional value and exceptional quality, as well as its ability to adapt to harsh climatic conditions, its low water requirements, and its contribution to supporting food security and promoting sustainable agriculture.
According to Saudi Press Agency, as part of its awareness campaign launched during Ramadan, the ministry indicated that millet cultivation is mainly concentrated in Makkah, Jazan, Aseer, Al-Baha, and Madinah regions, where pearl millet is the most widespread, alongside other varieties such as finger millet and foxtail millet.
The agency stated that millet is witnessing increasing demand during Ramadan for use in a variety of popular and healthy dishes, including whole and dehulled flour, as well as in the production of traditional bread, pastries, and biscuits, contributing to self-sufficiency and boosting the national economy.
Furthermore, the ministry noted that millet cultivation receives continuous support from the Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Saudi Reef) by empowering farmers and enhancing production capacities, leading to higher local supply and reducing reliance on imports.
