Egypt’s interior ministry grants exceptional prison visit on Christmas

CAIRO – Egypt’s Interior Ministry announced Thursday granting an exceptional visit to inmates at correctional and rehabilitation centers nationwide on the occasion of Coptic Christmas from January 9 to January 24.

The exceptional visit comes “within the framework of the ministry’s keenness to uphold human rights values, apply the modern approach of the punitive policy, and provide various aspects of care to inmates,” the ministry said in a statement.

Thousands of inmates have been pardoned on various national holidays over the past years.

Also, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reactivated in April the Presidential Pardon Committee, formed in 2016, to release prisoners of conscience and reintegrate them into society.
