EGYPTIAN OFFICER KILLED, 10 INJURED IN SINAI CLASHES

CAIRO, Egypt, – An Egyptian security officer was killed and 10 others were injured, during separate armed clashes near the cities of al-Arish and Sheikh Zuweid, in the Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian security sources said that the first shooting incident erupted during a raid campaign in the village of al-Kharuba, south of Sheikh Zuweid, killing an officer and wounding five soldiers, after armed men blew up their military vehicle.

Armed men also opened fire and blew up another Egyptian security vehicle, injuring three soldiers and two officers, near al-Arish.

The wounded were taken to al-Arish military hospital.

The Sinai Peninsula has been the stage of ongoing attacks, particularly targeting Egyptian military and police forces, which have increased since Egyptian President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi took power from democratically-elected Muhammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

The Egyptian president came under attack following his violent suppression of Muslim Brotherhood members following his rise to power, which Sisi has argued is necessary to deter future attacks in the Sinai and across Egypt.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the militant group responsible for a majority of attacks on military personnel, aligned with the Daesh group in Nov, 2014, changing its name to Sinai Province.-
