Egyptian, Italian FMs discuss boosting economic cooperation, consult on Libya crisis

Posted on December 1, 2022 by Web Desk

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, discussed on Thursday boosting the bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, especially the economic relations and investments.

This came as Shoukry started on Wednesday a visit to Rome to participate in the 2022 Rome MED Mediterranean Dialogues from 1 to 3 December under the presidency of Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella and with the participation of a number of foreign ministers of Mediterranean countries.

The ministers, during their Rome meeting, highlighted the need for building on the success stories of Italian companies in the Egyptian market, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Shoukry and Tajani discussed the regional and international issues of mutual concern, especially the developments of the Libyan crisis, the statement said.

In this regard, the Egyptian foreign minister was keen to review Egypt’s vision regarding the issues of the region, highlighting the efforts made to reach a settlement to these issues and restore regional stability and peace.

The ministers agreed on continuing consultations on regional and international issues of mutual concern and working on enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Italy in a way that suits the aspirations of their peoples, the statement said.

The 2022 Rome MED Mediterranean Dialogues comes within the framework of enhancing efforts to face joint challenges related to current international developments, a statement by the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

The conference devoted a dialogue session with Shoukry so that he reviews the Egyptian vision regarding regional and international developments as well as the food and energy challenges and the outcome of the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27).

In October, Italy’s new Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said her country is determined to enhance its bilateral cooperation with Egypt on crucial issues, including energy security, environment, and human rights.

Earlier in October, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi congratulated Meloni for assuming the post, wishing her success in leading Italy towards a future that befits its civilization and history.

“I look forward to working with her to enhance the Egyptian-Italian ties within the framework of the well-established partnership between Egypt and Italy in all fields,” El-Sisi said in a social media post.
