Egypt welcomes peace agreement between Ethiopia’s federal government, Tigray

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Thursday the agreement signed between the federal government of Ethiopia, and the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) to end hostilities, and that was signed in South Africa on Wednesday.

Ambassador Ahmed Abou Zeid, spokesperson of the ministry, expressed hope that the deal will contribute to achieve permanent peace in Ethiopia, and allow the chance for the government and people of Ethiopia to erase the impact of conflict, remedy its causes, and rebuild social peace.

The diplomat highlighted that establishing peace in Ethiopia is “a hope and a demand” of all African peoples, as it would consolidate the structure of peace and stability, on the continent, and in East Africa in specific.

Ambassador Abou Zeid thanked the African Union (AU) for brokering the agreement, as well as South Africa for hosting the 10-day talks that preceded the signing.

The fighting between the two parties broke out in late 2020, and incurred thousands of human losses, and the displacement of millions.
