Egypt urges tranquility in Cyprus

Egypt on Sunday called for calm in Cyprus and rejected any measures that could fuel tensions between the two parts of Cyprus in the aftermath of a recent attack on UN peacekeeping forces in the buffer zone.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a press release that it is essential to respect the mandate of UN peacekeepers and relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, and to fend off any actions that could escalate the situation and alter the fait accompli at the buffer zone.

The ministry, further, called for return to the track of a comprehensive settlement to the Cypriot cause based on relevant UNSC resolutions.

The UN said on Friday that angry Turkish Cypriots punched and kicked a group of international peacekeepers who obstructed crews working on a road that would encroach on a UN-controlled buffer zone in ethnically divided Cyprus.
