Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry underlined Monday the importance of resolving the crisis in Niger by diplomatic means, and discussing all ways to advance a peaceful settlement to preserve its security, stability, independence and non-interference in its internal affairs.
Shoukry made the remark during a phone call Shoukry received from Benin’s Foreign Minister Shegun Bakari, during which they discussed the developments of the crisis in Niger and its repercussions on the region, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Shoukry stressed that Egypt supports all mediation efforts aimed at getting out of the crisis, urging various relevant parties to engage seriously to reach a political solution.
He noted the need to deal responsibly with the humanitarian consequences, and to discuss ways to give access to humanitarian aid to mitigate the repercussions of the crisis on Niger’s people.
For his part, Bakari reviewed his country’s efforts and the steps taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) group to get out of the crisis.
During the phone call, both ministers discussed bilateral ties, as they underlined the significance of working together in order to maintain the positive momentum witnessed by the relations between both sides and the importance of continuing coordination on various issues regionally and internationally, the statement stated.
