Egypt treats thousands of Africas from Hepatitis C

Thousands of African patients with hepatitis C were treated within the Presidential initiative of eliminating Hepatitis C across the African countries.

The patients are from South Sudan, Chad and Eritrea, said Egyptian Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar in a virtual side-event to the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly to launch a UN Group of Friends to support global hepatitis elimination.

Egypt would run for the leadership of the group to work on accelerating the eradication of hepatitis C by 2030, in line with the achievement of the United Nations sustainable development goals and the goals of the World Health Organization.

The Egyptian Presidential initiative aims at transferring Egypt’s pioneering experience “100 Million Healthy Lives” to eliminate the virus C and detect non communicable diseases in Africa.

The initiative has been launched in October 2018 under the auspices of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and ended in April 2019 after targeting more than 45 million citizens. The Health Ministry has vowed to completely eliminate the disease from Egypt by 2022.
