Egypt FM stresses UN’s role in supporting political process in Libya

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stressed on Monday the important role played by the UN in supporting the political process and the constitutional path in Libya.

Shoukry’s remarks came during his meeting with Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission Abdoulaye Bathily, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid on his Twitter account.

Ambassador Abu Zeid, indicated that Minster Shoukry was keen to renew congratulations to Bathily for assuming his position on his first visit to Egypt.

Shoukry also expressed Egypt’s full support for Bathily to make his mission a success in order to restore stability in Libya, and stressing the centrality of the role of the United Nations and it impartiality, which makes it gain the confidence of the parties inside Libya and in the international community.

Minister Shoukry also highlighted the continuous efforts that Egypt made and is still making to resolve the crisis, especially through its recent hosting of rounds of the constitutional track between the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State, pointing to the importance of completing this track and the need to hold presidential and legislative elections simultaneously in Libya in order to end the crisis.

From his side, Bathily expressed his full appreciation for the constructive and pivotal Egyptian role in Libya, and what Egypt has suffered greatly over the past years as a result of the continuation of this crisis.

Bathily also stressed his aspiration to coordinate with Egypt during the coming period, as it was agreed to intensify work towards advancing the Libyan-Libyan political solution to achieve Security, stability and prosperity in Libya.
