Qatif: With the start of the 2026 shrimp fishing season, fish markets in Qatif Governorate have witnessed notable activity, as an increasing number of boats arrive carrying shrimp shipments, amid active wholesale auctions and a gradual rise in supply.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the Eastern Region branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture had announced the start of the shrimp fishing season in Saudi waters in the Arabian Gulf at the beginning of August, continuing through the end of January 2027. The season is part of the ministry's efforts to regulate the fishing season, sustain fish stocks, strengthen food security, protect marine resources, and support the national economy.
The branch confirmed the readiness of ports and the completion of the digital transformation of services for fishermen. It is also implementing intensive monitoring plans covering ports, markets, and supply chains to ensure product quality and enforce regulations against violators, in addition to supporting seasonal employment opportunities in coastal cities.
Meanwhile, several fish vendors expected shrimp quantities in the market to increase in the coming days as fishing activity grows. They noted that shrimp are available in several types and colors, including white and red, with each type having characteristics preferred by consumers. Larger sizes also begin to appear gradually in September and remain available through the end of January.
