Al-jouf: The date harvest season in Al-Jouf Region marks a key tradition in local hospitality, as locals eagerly await the annual summer yield of palm trees. Certain date varieties, such as 'Al-Safra' or 'Al-Siyatiya'-as they are locally known-ripen earlier than others, a hallmark of Al-Jouf's renowned date production.
According to Saudi Press Agency, 'Al-Safra' dates receive special care and attention from residents of Al-Jouf, as they are the first to ripen in the region. Historically, locals planted Al-Safra palms to secure early harvests each year. In the meantime, dedicated farms continue to cultivate this variety due to strong demand, alongside later-ripening types.
Associate Professor of Environment and Agriculture at the Biology Department of Al-Jouf University, Dr. Bassam Alowaiesh, indicated that the region's geography supports a variety of crops, including different types of palm trees. Dr. Alowaiesh noted that the low elevation of Sakaka and Dumat Al-Jandal provides suitable conditions for date production, while the elevated terrain in Busaita and Tabarjal is favorable for cultivating other varieties and olives. This geographical diversity enhances the region's agricultural output and quality, he said.
He also stated that Al-Jouf produces a wide range of date varieties, each with its natural characteristics in terms of early or late ripening. Moreover, he highlighted the longstanding interest of the region's residents in date cultivation, rooted in the traditions of their ancestors, with 'Hilwah Al-Jouf' standing out as the most prominent and favored variety.
Each year, Al-Jouf hosts the dates festival in Dumat Al-Jandal, providing a competitive economic platform for marketing the region's date harvest. The festival showcases derivative products such as date molasses and date paste, serving as an annual marketing window for local farmers and producers.
