CST and ITU Release Global Toolkit for E-Waste Management Policy and Regulation

General

Riyadh: The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has unveiled the 'Global Toolkit for Policy and Regulation Practices for E-waste Management'. This toolkit is designed to assist government entities in developing countries in creating national policies and legislation for e-waste management that align with international best practices. This announcement comes as Saudi Arabia hosts the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR25).

According to Saudi Press Agency, the toolkit offers comprehensive, actionable steps derived from experiences in Zambia, Rwanda, and Paraguay. These steps aim to help policymakers and regulators craft and enforce effective national legislation that facilitates the transition to a circular economy. It focuses on important areas such as inclusivity, sustainable financing mechanisms, and compliance, effectively linking policy creation to business models.

The toolkit is specifically targeted at government entities regulating the ICT sector with a focus on environmental sustainability. It is particularly valuable for countries that lack e-waste policies or are in the process of developing them. The toolkit provides adaptable, integrated tools to address significant challenges in e-waste management.

This initiative is part of Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment to leading international efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It originates from the 'Developing E-Waste Management Regulations' initiative, launched by CST in partnership with the ITU during the 2023 GSR. This initiative lays the groundwork for establishing global standards and regulations aimed at reducing e-waste worldwide.
