Copenhagen meeting aims to promote comprehensive dialogue to implement climate commitments

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said Copenhagen ministerial meeting on climate action, currently hosted by Denmark, aims at creating a comprehensive dialogue to discuss ways of realizing all climate-related commitments.

The minister participated Thursday 12/5/2022 in a three-way meeting held by Foreign Minister and president-designate of the 2022 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Summit (COP27) Sameh Shoukri and UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and former head of the COP26 Alok Sharma and Danish Minister of Climate and Energy and Public Utilities Dan Jorgensen.

Earlier in the day, Fouad took part in the Copenhagen ministerial meeting’s opening session. Shoukri delivered Egypt’s speech during the session, affirming that the meeting offered an opportunity on exchanging views and expertise regarding ways to implement the international climate action plan, through activating Paris UN Framework Convention on Climate.

He also underlined Egypt’s keenness on rendering COP27 a balanced gathering, taking into consideration all parties’ requirements.

The event witnessed participation of ministers and representatives of more than 50 countries seeking to help all parties to the agreement to meet their pledges, pertaining to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, together with all commitments to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted by Glasgow Climate Pact.

Shoukri underscored the great priority Egypt would be attaching to fulfilling all climate commitments during COP27, as well as bringing all pledges on this score into reality.

The foreign minister also voiced hope the meeting would help assess the current situation and work out a mechanism toward realizing the outcome of Paris UN Framework Convention on Climate.

Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and a number of minsters and representatives of civil society took part in the opening session.

Egypt is set to host COP27 in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh in November. During the stage of preparations for the conference, Egypt has vowed to speak for Africa’s aspirations to face climate change, build on the successful outcomes of COP26 in Glasgow, turn climate pledges into actions and support Paris Agreement.
