Coastal Storm Off US East Coast Poses Flooding Risks

Accra:Meteorologists have issued warnings about a slow-moving coastal storm off the US East Coast, expected to bring strong winds, coastal flooding, and beach erosion over several days. The most severe impacts are anticipated from North Carolina to New Jersey.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the storm, identified as a nor'easter, developed off the North Carolina coast and is expected to remain offshore for much of the week. This could lead to rough surf and elevated water levels, especially during high tides.

The areas most vulnerable to the storm's effects include North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, and New Jersey. Coastal flood warnings have been issued for parts of Maryland, Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina, with water levels potentially rising about 60 centimeters above ground level in low-lying areas. Wind gusts could exceed 72 kilometers per hour.

While heavy rainfall is not expected to be the primary concern, as most precipitation is projected to stay offshore, there is still uncertainty about the storm's trajectory and when it will move away from the coast. Meteorologists are also monitoring the possibility of the system developing subtropical characteristics in the coming week.
