Geneva: National Center for Meteorology (NCM) Chief Executive and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Association II (Asia) Chairman Dr. Ayman Ghulam stressed that Asia is among the regions most affected by natural disasters and is witnessing temperature increases nearly double the global average, placing it at the heart of global climate challenges.
According to Saudi Press Agency, speaking at the high-level session of the World Meteorological Congress held today in Geneva, which was attended by UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres, Dr. Ghulam said that artificial intelligence (AI) offers an exceptional opportunity to enhance forecasting and early warning capabilities, enabling proactive action and more effective recovery from disasters. He stressed the importance of ensuring equitable access to the benefits of such technologies to serve the global common good.
The NCM chief expressed optimism about the potential of AI to drive significant progress in the region, particularly within the framework of the 'Early Warnings for All' initiative, noting that major challenges remain, including the need to close the digital divide and boost technical skills and meteorological capacities to maximize the benefits of these advanced technologies.
