Arab Parliament Engages in Discussions on Sustainable Development at IPU Meeting

Tashkent: The Arab Parliament, represented by Shura Council Member and Arab Parliament Deputy Saad Al-Otaibi, took part in the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) during the 150th IPU General Assembly in Uzbekistan, from April 5 to 9.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the committee reviewed a draft resolution titled "Parliamentary Strategies to Mitigate the Long-Term Impact of Conflicts, Including Armed Conflicts, on Sustainable Development." Al-Otaibi, speaking for the Arab Parliament, applauded the draft's initiative to establish a global committee of experts. This committee would focus on negotiating ceasefires and engaging in effective mediation in regions affected by conflict. He emphasized the necessity of a clear legal framework to define the committee's operations, mandate, and authority to ensure binding decisions.

Moreover, Al-Otaibi highlighted the importance of including a specific clause in the draft resolution to denounce any form of forced displacement in occupied territories. He indicated that such acts are blatant violations of international law and humanitarian agreements and conventions.
