Arab League, ARCO Urge International Community to Provide Emergency Aid to Victims of Morocco, Libya Disasters

The Arab League and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) called on the international community to act immediately to provide all necessary humanitarian support to mitigate the consequences of the earthquake in Morocco and the flooding in Libya.

The call was made during a joint press conference today by Arab League Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Sector Haifa Abu Ghazaleh and ARCO Secretary-General Dr. Saleh Al-Tuwaijri.

They addressed the humanitarian situation in the Arab region, mainly the earthquake that struck Morocco and the storm that hit Libya. The event was held as part of the cooperation between the two sides within the framework of a memorandum of understanding signed between them in 2020.

Abu Ghazaleh stressed the Arab League Secretariat’s keenness to follow up on the humanitarian situation in the member states, noting that the Arab region is facing multiple humanitarian crises due to natural disasters, climate change, and armed conflicts, which led to the deterioration of vital sectors in many countries of the region.

She added that the Arab League is working through its various mechanisms, including specialized ministerial councils and affiliated organizations, to provide support to all Arab states that suffer from difficult humanitarian conditions, as well as to countries hosting refugees.

Al-Tuwaijri announced that an urgent appeal was made today to provide $9 million to the Libyan Red Crescent to meet immediate needs necessary to face the ramifications of the devastating storm.

He added that Arab countries have shown unprecedented solidarity with Morocco and Libya and their willingness to provide urgent assistance. He praised the role of the Red Crescent societies in Morocco and Libya for their role in assisting victims.
