ARAB HEADS OF IMMIGRATION CALL FOR STRONGER COORDINATION TO PREVENT TRAVEL TO CONFLICT ZONES

CAIRO,- The heads of immigration, naturalisation and passport authorities of Arab countries, have called for stronger co-operation and co-ordination between Arab states to block their citizens from travelling to conflict zones and areas of tension and being recruited by terrorist organisations.

In a communique issued following their 17th meeting in Cairo, the officials stressed the importance of enacting legislation to criminalise foreign fighting.

They called for using advanced technology like biometrics in travel and ID documents to prevent their use for terrorist purposes, and highlighted the importance of the authorities involved in countering terrorism.

Director-General of Naturalisation at the Interior Ministry Brigadier Saeed Rakan Al Rashidi headed the UAE delegation to the meeting.

During the two-day meeting, the participants discussed the role Arab immigration, residency and passport authorities play in fighting terrorism, dealing with refugees in the Arab region and the foundations of naturalisation in some Arab countries, among other important topics.

They will pass recommendations to the next session of the Arab Interior Ministers, an affiliate of the League of Arab States, for approval.
