Riyadh: The Arab European Cities Dialogue continued its second day in Riyadh today with a panel session titled "Towards Resilience: Climate Adaptation and Mitigation in Arab and European Cities," which highlighted practical initiatives in strategic planning and innovative financing, featuring Baghdad Mayor Eng. Ammar Musa Kazem, Tangier Mayor Mounir Lymouri, Cologne Mayor Andreas Wolter, and Turku Mayor Minna Arve.
According to Saudi Press Agency, participants emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships to confront climate challenges shared by Arab and European cities, particularly in the areas of water scarcity, rising temperatures, flood risks, and carbon emissions. They noted that climate change poses an accelerating threat that requires cities to adopt flexible and sustainable strategies. They also underscored that sharing expertise and enhancing cooperation among cities are key pillars in addressing emerging environmental challenges.
At the conclusion of the session, the participants agreed that urban resilience is no longer a choice but a necessity. They stressed that integrated efforts among cities are essential for developing solutions that transcend borders and promote a sustainable quality of life, through investment in environmental knowledge and planning based on innovation and integration.
The Arab European Cities Dialogue continues through May 13 with a series of sessions bringing together a distinguished group of mayors, governors, and city leaders from across the Arab world and Europe to discuss urban governance, sustainability, digital transformation, and climate challenges. The event aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation and advance the development of more inclusive and resilient future cities.
