American University of Beirut Joins European Project to Expand CAR-T Therapy Access in the Mediterranean

Beirut: The American University of Beirut has joined forces with international partners in the MILenARI project, a European initiative aimed at democratizing access to CAR-T therapy across the Mediterranean region. The project's inaugural online meeting marked the beginning of this ambitious venture, bringing together partners from various countries and representatives from the Interreg NEXT MED program, which is funding the initiative. With a total budget of £2,498,888.15, 89% of which is financed by the European Union, the project seeks to make advanced cancer treatment more accessible to patients in the region.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, CAR-T therapy is a cutting-edge immunotherapy that has significantly advanced the treatment of certain blood cancers by modifying T lymphocytes to target and eliminate cancer cells. Despite its promise, widespread access to CAR-T therapy is hindered by high costs and the complexity of its centralized production. MILenARI aims to address these challenges through international collaboration and the transfer of knowledge.

Coordinated by Cl­nic-IDIBAPS and involving key institutions such as the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan, Bambino Ges¹ Children Hospital in Italy, and the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, the project has set three primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to enhance the production capacity of lentiviral vectors in Spain, which are essential for manufacturing CAR-T. Secondly, it plans to share technology and provide training to Italy, Lebanon, and Jordan, enabling these countries to decentralize production and prepare for future clinical trials. Lastly, the project aims to lay the groundwork for an international clinical trial involving pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, thereby reducing health disparities.

Over its three-year duration, MILenARI aspires to create a significant social impact by democratizing access to advanced therapies, bridging gaps between countries, and enhancing the quality of life for cancer patients. Additionally, the initiative will bolster research and innovation capacities in the Mediterranean, fostering cooperation between academic and healthcare institutions. This collaboration is expected to not only benefit patients but also establish a network of knowledge that will advance cell and gene therapies.

Supported by the European Union's Interreg NEXT MED program, which advocates for a more competitive, inclusive, and innovative Mediterranean, MILenARI exemplifies how research and international collaboration can address global health challenges. Through technology transfer, training, and infrastructure development, the project strives to make CAR-T therapy a viable option for all patients in need.

The kick-off meeting successfully laid the groundwork for this transformative initiative, defining initial actions and reinforcing the commitment of all partners involved. With a strategic approach and unified vision, MILenARI embarks on its mission to revolutionize cancer treatment across the Mediterranean.
