AlUla’s Environmental Efforts Highlighted on Arab Environment Day

AlUla:Celebrated annually on October 14, Arab Environment Day emphasizes the significance of safeguarding natural resources and tackling environmental issues in the Arab region. AlUla Governorate is making strides in land rehabilitation, vegetation cover restoration, and wildlife protection, integrating environmental conservation with future development plans.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this year's observance underscores the sustainability of natural rangelands and their ability to withstand climate change, desertification, and land degradation. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) prioritizes addressing environmental degradation and restoring natural habitats to maintain the governorate's resources and biodiversity.

AlUla's environmental rehabilitation programs have successfully restored more than 5,100 hectares of natural rangeland. Additionally, over 530,000 seedlings from 60 native plant species have been planted, resulting in an increase in vegetation cover from 6% in 2018 to 35% by 2025. These efforts demonstrate the positive impact of restoration and protection initiatives on ecosystems.

In Sharaan National Park, spanning approximately 1,524 square kilometers, regulatory measures on grazing and other environmentally harmful activities have facilitated the growth of native plants. Preparations are also underway to reintroduce wildlife species historically linked to the region.

On Arab Environment Day, AlUla exemplifies how rangeland restoration, wildlife protection, and sustainable planning can collectively support environmental goals. This strategy emphasizes that land restoration is crucial not only for environmental purposes but also for sustaining life, ensuring community stability, and conserving natural resources for future generations.
