Riyadh: The Northern Borders Region is distinguished by its rich array of aromatic, nutritional, seasonal, and annual plants that play an integral and sustainable role in combating desertification, increasing vegetation cover, stabilizing the soil, enhancing biodiversity, improving the environment, and attracting eco-tourism enthusiasts.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Al-Qaliqlan (Savignya parviflora) stands out as one of the fastest-growing wild plants, especially following seasonal rains, found in the Northern Borders Region. It is visually appealing and favored by camels and sheep for grazing.
Chairman of the Aman Environmental Society Nasser Al-Majlad explained that the Northern Borders Region is classified as a grazing area and home to various plants with multiple uses. Environmental laws and conservation efforts have contributed to the resurgence and spread of many plants and trees in the region, including Al-Qaliqlan plant. This plant can reach up to 30 centimeters in height, with broad, elongated leaves at its base and rounded branches. It produces small white and violet flowers, and dense, hanging pods filled with lentil-shaped seeds.
Al-Majlad added that the name Al-Qaliqlan derives from the sound of its seeds rattling inside the pods when the wind moves them.
Experts highlight several benefits of Al-Qaliqlan plant, mainly its use as feed for livestock, including camels and sheep. It provides essential energy for animals and serves as a natural enhancer for milk production in livestock.
