Al-Jouf’s Date Storage Tradition: Preserving Flavor Through Ancient Methods

General

Jeddah: Storing dates after harvest is a key practice for preserving them for consumption during the extremely cold months, when low temperatures cause the crystallization of date syrup.

According to Saudi Press Agency, farmers participating in the 12th Dates Festival in Dumat Al-Jandal Governorate showcased stored dates alongside other popular varieties for which the region is renowned, highlighting their significance among the products marketed at the festival.

The process begins with harvesting dates after the palm trees have completed fruiting, followed by sun-drying and removing pits and impurities. The dates are then packed neatly into large, tightly sealed containers to prevent air and moisture from entering.

The storage period lasts up to five months, with containers opened at the end of the cold season. This process helps preserve the dates and maintain their texture, taste, and appearance.
