Akeed records 52 rumors in May

The Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor (Akeed) said it recorded 52 rumors in May, an increase of 8 rumors from April. Economic rumors came first with 21, or 40 percent, of the total rumors recorded this month, followed by 15 security rumors (29 percent), 8 public affairs rumors (15 percent), 4 health rumors (8 percent), and 4 political rumors (8 percent), while no social rumors were registered, according to Akeed’s monthly report issued Wednesday. The report showed that 47 rumors out of May’s 52 originated from local sources, 3 rumors from external sources, and two of unknown origin. Forty-two rumors, 81 percent of the total number, originated from local social media, and 10, or 19 percent, came from traditional media outlets, it said. The monitor urged social network users to refrain from sharing or re-posting any content without a credible source, noting that relying on these sites for news without considering content veracity leads to a great deal of incorrect and inaccurate news, rumors, and misinformation.
