African Union and IGAD Endorse Quad’s Initiative on Sudan Conflict

Khartoum: The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have expressed their approval of the recent Joint Statement issued by the Quad, which includes the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. The statement addresses the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

According to EMM, the African Union and IGAD have welcomed the Quad’s call for rapid humanitarian access and the protection of civilians, alongside the proposal for a three-month humanitarian truce. This initiative is seen as a preliminary step towards achieving a permanent cessation of hostilities through the Jeddah process. The position taken by the Quad aligns with the African Union and IGAD’s own Roadmaps for peace in Sudan.

The African Union and IGAD have reiterated their commitment to collaborate with the Quad, the Sudanese people, and other partners to bring an end to the conflict, safeguard Sudan’s sovereignty and unity, and promote a civilian-led political transition. In line with these efforts, the African Union and IGAD, along with the League of Arab States, the United Nations, and the European Union, are set to convene a new round of consultations this October with Sudanese civilian groups. The aim is to foster unity among Sudanese factions and lay the groundwork for an inclusive dialogue and political transition to a civilian-led constitutional order.

Both the African Union and IGAD, like the Quad, assert that a military solution is not viable for the Sudanese crisis. They are eager to work alongside the Quad to end the war and restore civilian-led governance in Sudan.
