14th Petersberg Climate Dialogue kicks off in Berlin

The 14th Petersberg Climate Dialogue kick-started in the German capital, Berlin, on Tuesday, with delegations from 40 countries attending, mainly aiming at laying the groundwork for the COP28 Climate Change Conference in the United Arab Emirates.

The conferees will discuss how to solve the global climate crisis and to strengthen trust both in multilateral climate negotiations and between states.

In a speech delivered via videoconference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for stepping up efforts to fight climate changes, urging governments to act as soon as possible.

He regretted that the world had long winked at climate changes that now pose a threat to everyone, which requires more international efforts to fight this phenomenon.

For her part, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock addressed the gathering by saying that it is necessary to promote the use of renewable energy, including wind and solar energy, in order to ensure a successful environment policy.

“Together, we’re facing the greatest security challenge of our century, namely the climate crisis. All of us gathered here today can do our part to mitigate this crisis,” she said.

Germany’s goal for the next World Climate Conference is to create a “roadmap for transformation” with concrete solutions to maintain the planetary threshold of 1.5?°C.

The Petersberg Climate Dialogue was launched in 2010 by former German Chancellor Merkel and brings together selected states on an annual basis to prepare the ground for successful negotiations at the COP climate change conferences. The first Petersberg Climate Dialogue took place on the Petersberg in Bonn, hence its name. Since then, it has been held in Berlin
